Decorative chromium plating is widely used as a final surface finish after bright nickel plating or satin nickel plating because of its hardness, excellent corrosion resistance and color fastness. Chromium plating films are not subject to environmental regulations because they are made of metallic chromium. On the other hand, chromium plating solutions contain hexavalent chromium and trivalent chromium ions, and decorative chromium plating using hexavalent chromium is subject to the RoHS directives and wastewater regulations, and the like. Therefore, decorative chromium plating using trivalent chromium is now becoming more widespread. Generally, trivalent chromium decorative plating films have had problems such as poor corrosion resistance and a tendency to turn black. We have now developed a new trivalent chromium plating solution that produces a bluish silver color equivalent to hexavalent chromium plating.
