Lithium dendrite inhibitor

Rising commodity prices and the electrification of automobiles have spurred worldwide research into various rechargeable batteries, including solid-state batteries. Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, which are now widely used, have high energy density and low degradation from charging and discharging. So, they are used in smart phones, notebook computers, portable cameras and other devices.

However, many lithium-ion batteries use a non-aqueous organic solvent as the electrolyte, which causes smoking and ignition when exposed to external shocks. In the near future, the introduction of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources will require high-capacity rechargeable batteries that exceed the performance of current lithium-ion batteries.
Utilizing our expertise in aqueous plating technology, we have developed an additive that inhibits lithium dendrite growth in non-aqueous electrolytes.

Product features, specifications

Conventional metallic lithium batteries have the problem of dendrites (resinous crystals) that form when lithium ions are reduced to metallic lithium. Dendrites cause a short circuit inside the battery, resulting in loss of battery function and ignition, making it difficult to commercialize a metallic lithium battery using metallic lithium as the negative electrode.
The electrolyte we have developed strongly suppresses the coarsening of lithium deposits, thus enabling the formation of a smooth lithium film.
Since metallic lithium secondary batteries can store about 10 times more electricity per weight and several times more per volume than lithium-ion secondary batteries, we expect to develop the electrode for secondary batteries.
